The Vault
No more than a hideaway amidst the gothic grandeur of the StarHall, this cozy lounge is a place of laughter if not greatness, warmth if not splendour. The close stone walls are insulated with tapestries of all shapes and sizes, most a little worn, several faded and a good many depicting scenes from childhood stories. The mismatched chairs and sofas are in a similar state, rescued from cellars and rubbish-heaps but perhaps more softer and more comfortable for that, scattered in a rough circle on a hardwood floor. A low round table in the centre of the room holds cards, discarded hides, mugs, and a pot that holds klah as long as someone remembers to fill it. The one window at the back wall lets light and air into the warm, cozy room.
Scattered throughout the rooms are numerous glowbaskets. Thin hides, that would be transparent if they weren't coloured in light shades of red green and blue cast a colourful and happy atmosphere throughout the room. Small bells and sticks, hung near the window, create soft, eerie yet comfortably soft sounds,
On the perch are Pingouin, Teremi, Kataxia, Tas, Zaflin, Scorpy, Rygel, Cami, and Lil'Topaz.
You see Sweet Root plant, Kaelli, Tomato plant, Book of Constellations, Adoran's Stick, and Jenavia here.
Caelum, Terran, Kazandar, and Naomi are here.

Terran
Sharp features etch themselves impenitently in an unfinished setting, features that have lost all of the baby fat left to a pointed chin and too pert nose. Inky eyelashes frame over-large hazel eyes, dark hue pitched more towards a velvety fawn than lush forest. Wayward spikes of cinnamon hair, untamed and untreated, sprawl chaotically, color complemented by a milk chocolate complexion and made a whole by paled cherry lips. Matched by a lanky frame with the unfulfilled promise of a slender musculature, the over all impression is one of a youth waiting to grow into himself.
The color of shadows, a crisp linen shirt draws in the light. A cotton undertunic of light blue weave glows under the dark shirt, tucked securely into unadorned dark leather slacks. Once midnight blue, everyday use has lightened the color to a few shades above.
Terran wears the knot of a StarCraft Probationary Apprentice.

Naomi
Jade-green eyes, their colour growing brighter in the light, are set evenly spaced upon the girl's face, almond shaped and fringed with blonde lashes. Their wide, curious state gives her face a more childish appearance- one only reinforced by a baby's button-shaped nose. Peach-tinted skin, with often rosy cheeks, and honey-colored hair, cut to chin-length and hopelessly frizzy, complete Naomi's face. At just below average stature, most of Naomi's height is in her legs, and a little extra weight is apparent in the form of muscle and pudginess on various portions of her body. Hands and feet calloused through work- or the efforts exerted to avoid it- give her an all-around roughened appearance, though her look is still one of petite cuteness, a fun-loving smile often twisting her lips.
Boots, bright white and laced tight around shapely legs, graduate into pants that are equally white (and equally tight), the color of innocence seemingly a major factor of Naomi's leathers as they cling oh-so-tightly to her figure and flatter her long legs. Purity is important. Seams of cross-stitched purple thread run up pants and short sleeves alike, adding regality to virginity, with a panel of lattice-worked laces set into the front of Naomi's bodice, obviously designed to show off cleavage. Purple fringes of lace then appear at her bust as well as at her wrists, fine point detail to finish off the ulitimate in leathers.
Black, orange, and green mesh together in the knot resting on Naomi's shoulder, clashing horribly. Two cords of orange and black, and a silver thread, mark her as a Wingrider of Ista Weyr, while a green ribbon displays her lifemate's color.
A badge is worn by the greenrider, as well -- the badge of the Wavecutter wing. Against a background of Ista's volcano is a cresting wave of deep blue, and along the border of the whole badge is green, so dark it seems almost black; this border represents the color of her dragon.

Kazandar
Tall and thin, he stands at a height of maybe 5' 10. He's firm and mildly muscular, with skin a dusky, tan color from the hot Southern sun. Dark brown locks of hair, that's almost lank, hangs down just past his eartips. A few faded highlights remain, a testament to his days outdoors. Two locks of his hair, near his face, constantly fall out of place into his eyes and he is often seen brushing them away unconsciously. He seems friendly enough, wearing a bright grin, but it could just be he's gone insane. A long nose runs down his face, slightly crokked from being broken once. Deep hazel eyes are beneath thick, dark brows that are set on either side of his long nose. His eyes have a twinkle in them. Insanity? Mischief? Or anger?
A long forest green vest, made of a suede wherhide, hangs from his shoulders; the ends of it embroidered with a knot design. Under the vest is a loose, long-sleeved, white shirt of a thin, soft fabric. The two top buttons of the shirt are always undone to let a little breeze through, cooling him off in the summer heat. The ends of the vest are sometimes tucked into a thick brown belt; plain, but durable. Attatched to the belt it a black pouch, containing his most precious belongings. The belt holds up a pair of deep brown, almost black, wherhide pants. They're tucked into his old, brown, calf high boots, hanging over the edge a little giving a poofy appearance.
Kazandar wears the knot of a StarCraft Journeyman.

Caelum
Impish features sketch themselves unrepentantly in an incomplete setting, a visage that has lost all baby fat left to a pointed chin and too pert nose. Ebony eyelashes frame over-large hazel eyes, dark hue pitched more towards lush forest than a velvety fawn. Unruly spikes of copper hair, untamed and untreated, skew chaotically, color complemented by a bronzed complexion and made a whole by blushed lips. Matched by a lanky frame with the unfulfilled promise of a slender musculature, the over all impression is one of a youth waiting to grow into himself.
Shadow's touch coalesces as crisp black linen, dark color unflattering and stark. An undertunic of fine cotton weave clings to a slender torso, tucked securely into dark leathers. Faded by use and abuse, the once black of the smooth leather has paled to deep charcoal.

Terran sees a crazy greenrider and hides every time. And this time is no different, Terran shrinks to his brothers side hoping to avoid her notice. "You can't be more 'en 50." Very sure about that, maybe.

Neliar blinks in surprise at all the people in the room, strange.

"Hm? Oh, he's much more than 50. At least double that. Looks good for an old hag, doesn't he?" Naomi replies with that absentminded, peculiar sort of voice. Head tilts to the side, her gaze drawn away from the door again. "Kaz? Are you /very/ sure I don't live here?" Immediately upon turning, she glares at both Terran and Caelum. "You! The adorable one--" Finger jerks accusingly at Terran; "And the... okay one." That, of course, is Caelum. "Beebo and Beebo! I've missed you guys."

Carise walks in from the Main Hall Balcony.

Carise
Dark hair falls lightly down her back, deep brown waves reaching to her waist. Icy blue eyes are surrounded by thick black lashes while thin brows arch across her high forehead. A small nose still has shadows of freckles spotting her face, remnants of her early years, while rosy pink dyes well-formed lips. She isn't extremely tall, but not short either, having reached a normal height. Her figure has finally filled out, curves flowing along her still thin, though not frail, body. Small yet well-toned muscles move under skin tanned by the Istan Sun, she's plenty able to take care of herself. A bit of a rushed appearance surrounds her, her work as a Journeywoman never seeming to end.
She wears a simple yet elegant skirt, the blue material falling lightly to touch the ground, its sleekness forming into waves around her legs. A loose sky blue tunic, long sleeves hiding her hands and disguising her figure. Occasionally, lightweight brown sandals peek out from under the long skirt while beaded bracelets jingle, obscured by her sleeves. Perched on Carise's shoulder is Talyn. Perched on Carise's shoulder is Crais.
Carise is wearing a thin Silver Ring. This Silver ring has a beautifull Saphire centered on it, it also has a design painted around the outside that you can't quite follow with your eyes, or else, you wind up with a splitting headache.
Carise wears the knot of a StarCraft Journeywoman.

Carise slips into the Vault, pausing as she blinks at the gathering, eyes going from Rider to the twins, and back. Um... right. Not gonna ask this time.

Can't be? Why not, you young whipper-snapper? Cough cough. "I'm...old. We'll just leave it at that." At least he feels old. Sniff. All these new appies he doesn't know by name...Speaking of that. There's an appy he doesn't know. The j-man grins at Nao. He's not hiding from her..yet..."See? She knows. I'm old. Hag?" Hey! Kaz frowns, and then rolls his eyes at Nao, "We went over this. You /don't/ live here anymore..." Sigh. Well, at least the Rider's attention is on the twins now, instead. "Oh, Carise..." He's...innocent.

Terran /glares/ at Naomi. "That's not my name." It's not even a decent name. Cael can defiantly stay between him and the crazy 'rider. Noticing another Jman come in the door he begins to wonder why they're invading the vault. And, oh, another adult to hide behind.

Caelum throws a pillow at Naomi with no further ado, whipping it across to the greenrider with his trademark too-sweet smile. "Cael," he says firmly, sliding to his feet and standing with fists on his hips in the echo of every angry headwoman on Pern. "Not Beebo - it's even a shorter name to remember!" Of course, only after he throws the pillow and snaps back at the rider does he remember others in the room, sliding a from-the-corner-of-his-eyes grin at the journeyman. Sweet kid - really.

Neliar looks on rather amused, eyes going for twin to twin following the conversation, "Hi Carise." he calls noticing his mentor has come into the room.

Carise giggles, shaking her head as she glances from one to the other. "Wait... if you're old, that makes Nao here even more ancient, doesn't it?" Blinking at Terran and Caelum, she looks at Nao with a blink. Um... right. "Nao... are you okay?" If calling Probbies Beebo and thinking she still lives at the Hall can be call okay, of course. A nod to Neliar and she just blinks, not moving from the door.

Naomi frowns at Kaz, exhaling quickly in a puff. "Are you /sure/?" She forgets from day to day, see. Neliar gets a weird look, but, alas, he is safe, for Terran speaks. "Are you calling me a /liar/?" she exclaims, jumping up suddenly, waving her fists about. And then a pillow hits her. "Beebo! You lousy little..." And so, the Istan greenrider charges, immediately grabbing hold of Caelum's hair, but not pulling. Just holding. Next, that oh-so-innocent expression is turned on Carise. "I'm younger than Kaz, in spirit if not in body," she notes gruffly, before nodding. "I'm just fine, dear. Thank you."

Kazandar isn't /invading/...exactly...Well, maybe a little. It /was/ his vault once too. Long, long ago in a far away...Er. He snorts with laughter at Cael, grinning. As if he /really/ care if Nao gets scolded and pillows thrown at her? He'd do it himself. "Aw, but Beebo's...kinda nice." Snicker. Carise receives and innocent look. "But, Reese, how do you figure?" A sulkily, fed up frown is directed at Nao, innocence gone as he snaps, "/Yes/! You don't live here!" She is fine...for Nao. That's not saying much.

Terran backpeddles furiously as his twin is attacked. Oh no, nobodies allowed to beat on Cael but him. Running over Terran grips Naomi's hand as hard as he can, "Let go."

Carise buries her face in her hands, shaking her head slowly with a soft sigh. Chaos. Hands sliding enough to peer at Kaz, she coughs slightly. "Well, if you're old, Nao's ancient, since she's older?" Despite what the scary greeny says. And the bit of argument quickly reminds her /why/ she avoided the vault. Especially if Nao was around.

"I'll bite you," Caelum promises up at Naomi, flashing white teeth in a snarky little smile, "if you don't let of my hair. And yes, I am," he adds after a second. Thumbing his chest, he repeats, "Cael." He points at Naomi: "Crazy." And then again with his angelic smile, one hand holding his hair down as he wiggles out of Naomi's grasp, short hair hard to keep a hold on.

Neliar looks over at Carise wondering if she'll give him extra lessons since he's so slow at learning. "Hey Carise could you go over Optic with me when you have the time?"

Kazandar sits back onto the couch to watch the show. Ra-ra-ra! The contented grin slips off his face and he turns his head to pout at Carise, "Now don't say that, it's mean." Huff. "Nao said I was old." He has a hard time remembering she's older..and usually doesn't care. "Oh, alright Cael." The j-man gives in. "But Beebo /is/ just..small and cute." And silly. So Kaz likes it.

Naomi stands, and heads for the door. "Fine." Hmph. Out she goes. Hahaha.
Naomi goes home.

Carise nods slowly with a glance at Neliar, before her gaze wanders around the room. "That's probably the best thing..." With the chaos in there and everything. "Um... come to the observatory when you're ready." Maybe its safer in there.

Caelum stares dully after Naomi, then shakes his head absently and rubs the patch Naomis been holding with a half-smirk. "Well," he finally says, before flashing a dangerous smile at Kazandar. "Do you think I'm small and cute?" He likes the cute bit, but don't call him small - even if, well, he is. And scrawny besides that. "Is she always like that?" The last is added with a thumb pointed at the greenriders retreating backside, face screwed up something awful.

You go to the Observatory.

Observatory
Spherical, predictable, much a reflection of the heavens beyond is the temple of this observatory dedicated to the continued survey of the skies. Constructed sturdily and lined with shelves and cabinets necessary for equipment storage, nearly every available space on the smooth plastered walls is hidden by the arrangement of charts, maps and diagrams. A high ceiling arches above, contrived to be fitted with the portals necessary for viewing and carefully fabricated sliding shutters to protect the delicate sky-ward pointed lenses when not in use. On the wall opposite the door, so that all who enter may see it, is a 'mural' of the Rukbat system.
It is an autumn midmorning.
On the cast-iron railings around the great viewer is Tanis.
You see Observatory DistanceViewer, Adoran, and Mural of the Rukbat System here.
Carise is here.

Neliar wanders in from the Balcony. "Hello Carise, sorry to bother you but I'm having trouble understanding Optics."

Carise nods as she plops down on the platform around the DistanceViewer. "Its no problem, really." Waving a hand around, she blinks. "Do you want me to just go over the whole thing? And then we can pick out questions from there?"

Neliar sits downs, "what ever is best for you." he's easy as long as he understands it this time he doesn't mind.

Carise nods quickly. "You have your DV, right?" Without waiting for an answer, she takes a deep breath, ploughing on. "Your DV is a Refracting DV. A refracting DV works using two convex lenses inside a tube. Light enters one side of the tube, where it passes through the first lens. The image is flipped upside down and continues to the second lens where it is magnified. From here, the image goes to your eye. The final image you see is actually upside down. Convex lenses look like a pane of glass where one or both sides are arched outwards. The opposite is a concave lens, in which the arch goes towards the middle of the lens."

Neliar hurriedly takes out some hide and scribbles the information down, rubbing his wrist when he has finally finished. Wow that was a lot of information. nodding to himself he takes out his DV and has a quick look at it.

Carise shakes her head slowly. "Nope, the image isn't distorted."

Neliar has to write as fast as he can to keep up with Carise, she's really going some today but at least it is becoming clearer to him. "top end....mirror.." is muttered as he tries not to leave any thing out.

Carise waits one more moment before taking up the monologue again. "The last type of DistanceViewer is a catadioptric DV. A catadioptric DV is a combination of a refracting and a reflecting DV. It uses two mirrors, therefore the light changes direction twice. It also uses lenses to magnify the image. They are about the same size as a Reflecting DV."

Neliar hms "so a catadioptirc DV is a combination refracting and a reflecting DV" he could never remember what it was before. At least he's learning something at last!

Carise nods. "Exactly." Tapping her fingers lightly, she thinks for a moment. "If you don't have any questions, I'll go over the part on taking care of your DV."

Neliar shakes his head to indicate he doesn't have any question, he can never think of nay until the class is over! He picks his Dv up and takes a closer look at it.

Laurel glides in with a smile in from the Main Hall Balcony.

Laurel
With interesting green/blue eyes that watch all that happens, Laurel is an intelligent girl. Light hair frames an open face that reveals a curious and intelligent nature, and it is turned towards the waiting world and skies above. Soft spoken at first, she opens up as you get to know her. Golden hair that glistens when touched by light falls to her shoulders. Tall and slender, she carries grace not usually seen in one her age. Neither slight in frame nor bulky, she has the potential of being an attractive young lady, but she doesn't believe so. For now, her well-rounded figure accentuates her slender body. Her lips are turned slightly upwards, as if she could smile at any moment.
Brown boots with the appearance of suede reach midcalf, covering slender feet. Swirling about with an airy quality, a light skirt of a very soft material that goes from light blue to navy touches her ankles. Adding a darker edge to her soft features, a black shirt that fits her figure well makes her hair seem lighter and her face more mature.
Laurel wears the knot of a StarCraft Apprentice.

Carise grins, nodding her head. "Well then. If you're looking through your DV and things look fuzzy, you probably have to clean the lenses. By twisting the whole DV, it will open up and you can take out the lenses. You should only clean them with the soft clothes that are in the boxes in /those/ cabinets over there." A finger is pointed to wall. "Be very careful not to scratch them or break the lenses, although if you do, make sure to tell a staffer so we can get you another DV or lens." The, she starts counting things off on her fingers as she goes over them. "Don't drop you DV, don't sit on it, don't take it swimming. Don't look at Rukbat. Don't use it to play fetch with a firelizard. Do take care of it, do keep it dry, Do try and keep from breaking it. Because, if you break two, you'll be learning how to make your own DV."

Neliar turns and looks at Laurel, feeling his heart miss a beat. "Hi Laurel."

Laurel looks around, focusing on the DV for a moment before smiling over at Neliar. "Hey, Neliar. Looks like there's a class going on, huh?" She looks to Carise.

Neliar stands up and walks over to the cabinets to get some clothes. He takes a couple just encase Laurel needs one. Sitting back down he picks his DV up again and gently twists it until it opened. He gently picks up one of the lens and rubs it with the cloth. "Hey Laurel do you need a cloth." He looks over at Carise to make sure he's doing this right..

Carise nods with a grin. "That's right... just like that. Remember to be careful." A grin at Laurel and she nods. "Aye, Neliar asked for a review of Optics and DistanceViewers."

Laurel nods with a smile. "That's convenient because I don't know much myself. Thanks," she directs towards Neliar as she takes a cloth.

Carise nods slowly to Laurel, grinning slightly. "Well, do you have DistanceViewer of your own yet?" Moving towards the wall cabinets, she pauses, waiting for an answer.

Neliar's hand lingers slightly longer than necessary as he hands the cloth to Laurel, turning back to the job in hand. "I'm being as careful as I can." it's not easy when you've got big fingers to hold little lenses.

Laurel shakes her head. "No, I don't. I don't have much of anything, to be honest.

Carise nods quickly, opening one of the cabinets to pull out a DV. Moving back towards the pair, she offers her the Distancviewer, with a grin. "Did you catch what I said about how to take care of it?"

Neliar carefully puts the lenses back in place and puts the DV back together. He looks through it experimentally to make sure it's clean.

"Yes," Rhel responds, taking the DV carefully. "Only soft cloths, don't scratch it or damage it. If things are fuzzy, that's a good sign it needs to be cleaned." She grins, looking at the DV.

Carise grins, nodding her head. "Right..." A ponder and she watches Neliar for a moment before grinning. "Well, if you want, I can go over the different kinds while you work on cleaning your 'viewer."

Neliar puts his viewer down, quite content just to sit here and watch Laurel.

Laurel pulls her hair back, nodding. "If you would, please?" She gives a little smile.

Carise nods, "If you want me to stop, just let me know." Taking a deep breath, she launches into her explanation. "The DV in front of you is a Refracting one. The opposite is a concave lens, in which the arch goes towards the middle of the lens, like a cave."

As Carise speaks Neliar goes back through his notes to make sure he's not missed any thing out.

Laurel nods slowly, taking that in. "That makes sense," she murmurs with a grin.

Carise nods, a wave going over her shoulder to the Observatory DV. "This is a reflecting DV. Reflecting DVs are larger than refracting DVs. Reflecting DVs use mirrors to magnify the object that you are looking at. The top end is open and the light travels through here to a concave mirror at the bottom. This mirror collects and concentrates the light. From here, the light hits a second mirror, that is in the center of the telescope. This mirror reflects the image into an eyepiece where another lens focuses it for you to see."

Laurel glances at the Observatory DV and then at the one before her. "Alright." She looks up to Carise.

Neliar nods as he reads through the notes, yep he got them all.

Carise grins. "The last type of DistanceViewer is a catadioptric DV. A catadioptric DV is a combination of a refracting and a reflecting DV. It uses two mirrors, therefore the light changes direction twice. It also uses lenses to magnify the image. They are about the same size as a Reflecting DV." A wave of her hand as she slips to the floor. "And... if there aren't any more questions... class, or whatever it is, is dismissed."

Neliar carefully puts the cap back on his DV and slips it into his pocket. "what you up to?" he asks of Laurel as his tidies his notes away!

Laurel smiles. Catiodioptric. What a mouthful! "So do we have each type here at the Hall?" She glances over at Neliar with a smile. "Oh, nothing exciting besides taking a class," she laughs.

Carise shakes her head slightly. "We only have the refracting, what you use, and the reflecting here. At the Main Hall in Benden, however, they have a large Catiodioptric DistanceViewer." Ayep. "Anything else?"

"No, that's all I wanted to know. I'll just look over notes or borrow Neliar's if I have to," she says with a grin.

Carise grins, nodding her head. "Then, I'm going to go get some other work done. You know where to find me if you have any questions."
Carise goes home.

Neliar grins to himself, she can borrow my notes any time she wants!

Laurel leans back, looking down at her DV. "So how are you, Neliar? Haven't seen you around."

Neliar smiles back at Rhel. "I've been fine I've been spending a lot of time with another appy called Iyan. He seems really nice." he watches her face looking for some reaction.

Laurel laughs, shaking her head. Then she straightens up and glances over at Neliar. "Glad you met another appy, I'm glad for you," she says simply, dodging any mention of him.

Neliar searches her face and sees no sign of reaction, Oh well maybe she doesn't like Iyan as much as he thought. "have you made many friends yet, most of the people I seem to know are all Sr Appies but they are a nice lot." especially Linora and Shanel they have both helped him to adjust to life here.

Laurel grins over at him. She's not the type of person to like someone the first meeting. "I've made a few friends, but like you said, mostly Sr. Appies." She shrugs.

Neliar grins back. "with todays class it shouldn't be much longer until I'm a Sr Appy. I really only need to work on my project." It'll be strange being a Sr Appy, that's when the /really/ hard work starts.

Laurel sighs, nodding. "Yeah, not too much longer." She thinks about all that will bring.
